About Me
I have been working within the field of community music for the past five years as a music leader but with many varying roles. I am primarily a percussionist, music teacher and workshop leader but after a recent promotion my role has been more divisive, working within a team to plan termly objectives and deliver a curriculum that identifies the needs of the target learning group. In all cases my focus has been on the community to use music and the arts as a tool for engaging, enlivening and interacting with different social groups within the ‘hard-to-reach’ sector of society.
My most recent position was Head of Percussion with In Harmony England working with primary schools in deprived areas to re-engage children with education by teaching general music and percussion. Our after school prevision focused on forming a one hundred strong symphony orchestra and two chamber groups that performed in schools, universities and churches. I was in charge of the percussion team and my role included writing the mid term, weekly and daily plans for the in-school prevision, devising ways of teaching the syllabus including games, songs and activities and arranging classical compositions to be made playable at primary school level.
My strengths are in formulating highly ambitious termly plans and energetic, vibrant and exciting daily lesson plans aimed at engaging children on all levels with minimal talking and maximum playing allowing ‘complete submersion’ in the music. My techniques have helped to inspire children to learn and even become better pupils. In fact, a recent survey conducted by Priory research found that learning on the In Harmony program was improving the pupils literacy, numeracy and attendance at school by up to 20%.
I started out in life as a professional drummer and played many gigs including Glastonbury Festival, Radio 1’s Maida Vale Studios and even a tour of prisons in the West Midlands. This is where I became interested in helping young offenders as I realised the potential of music to engage people who otherwise feel completely removed from the community. These people can pose a great risk to society and are often very costly, placing a great burden on the welfare state. Music has been proven to captivate them, inspiring them to engage themselves and focus on something bringing about change in their lives on many levels.

Other Skills / Additional Information
Other important qualities are my personal skills as you have to be very amicable, tolerant and above all patient in the world of live music as in the studio. I am a great organiser and motivator of people and have made many succesful projects out of it. My particular skill is arrangement of other peoples music for a live setting. Being a drummer I can map out the song and it's rhythmical impact from start to finish with the most musical effect in a way that other musicians sometimes overlook. Playing the bass has given me another aspect of my rhythmical diversity and helps me write structured back-lines to all kinds of music.
